About the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2023

In 2008, the Canadian government established the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program to increase Canada’s capacity to attract and retain world-class doctoral students, as well as to build Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education learning. Vanier academics have leadership abilities as well as a high level of scholarly success in graduate studies in the natural sciences and/or engineering, social sciences and humanities, and health. The academic scholarships are for a doctoral degree (or a combined MA/Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.).

The goal of this program is to attract and retain world-class doctorate candidates who have both leadership abilities and a high level of academic success in graduate studies in the natural sciences and/or engineering, social sciences and humanities, and health.

The following conditions must be met in order to be eligible for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship:

  • English is the required language.
  • Countries eligible: Permanent residents of Canada, Canadian citizens, and foreign citizens.
  • You should be working on your first doctorate (along with a dual undergraduate/graduate research program). MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D. (where there is a documented and strong research component). It should be noted that only the Ph.D. element of a combined degree is eligible for financing; by May 1, 2023, you should not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral study.
  • You must be picked by a single Canadian university that has obtained a Vanier CGS quota.

  • You should plan to pursue a full-time doctorate (or dual graduate program such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.) study and research at the nominated university in the summer semester or the academic year after the release of results.   • To pursue or complete a doctoral degree, you must not have or have had a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
  • You must have earned a first-class average in each of the preceding two years of full-time study or equivalent, as assessed by your academic institution. Applicants are encouraged to inquire about the institution’s concept of a first-class average.

  • Scholars are responsible for contacting the academic institution for more information about selecting the appropriate federal granting agency, locating the appropriate contact person within a department/faculty, and seeking advice or answering questions about content and how to best present the information in their application.
